    Guys? if u have an error by Send message type output.writeObject("ClIENT -" + message); then it shold give u a chose to sround by Catch "     private void sendMessage(String message){
            try {
                output.writeObject("ClIENT -" + message);
                output.flush();
               showMessage("n CLIENT -" + message);
            } catch (IOException e) {
                // TODO Auto-generated catch block
                e.printStackTrace();
            } "

    You most certainly can FileOutputStream and FileInputStream may be of use to you. This is more complex and you may need to do some research. stackoverflow is a form specifically for programmers and you may get many of your questions answered there. Best of luck!

    I love these tutorials Bucky!
    The only trouble I'm having is (I'm trying to make this display in a console window versus a GUI), when I call the 'sendMessage' method anywhere outside of the ActionListener, I get a NullPointerException error… Anyone know why?

    because the client is trying to connect to their host
    use your ip address pm me if you want to know how

  14. Baruch Hen November 13, 2019 at 11:53 pm - Reply

    @matii2639 its because u have 2 forward ur ip instead of writing 127.0.0.x because its the ip of every computer basically, its ur computer's local host. Try an ip forwarding program like hamachi or anything else, tht should work

    Bucky, first of all great tutorials, loved them :D. Second when I try to host the server from my pc and give the client to another PC the connection between the client and the server cannot be made. I opened the port, yes, also added the port to the firewall exception list and still doesn't work. Any idea whats going on?

    I'd go with PHP myself. However if you wanna start making mobile applications, go with Java.

  19. Jmac217 November 13, 2019 at 11:53 pm - Reply

    I really need to start following these from the beginning
    I just don't know exactly why I'd wanna use Java over C/C++ or PHP.

    Bucky, thank you for explaining sockets so well, but perhapse you could cover application layer protocols? I think an awesome chat program diserves an awesome protocol.
