    I kinda knew how to make a basic theme from scratch but going through this tutorial makes me appreciate and understand WordPress so much more. And you’re right! It does spark your imagination. Instead of displaying the content, I used wp_trim_words to trim the content to make it look like an excerpt if the excerpt field was empty!

    i do not have that excerpt button from screen option, and read more tag doesnt appear nor i can click , it shows only […] even after i modified the_content()

    This fixed my issue with the "continue reading" link not showing up all the time. Great tutorial!!

    Yet another great tutorial .. I am confident that when i finish the series that i will be able to start designing my own templates. Do you have separate videos for splash pages and plugins ect… when i finish i feel like i need to keep learning all the small things .. 😀

    Thank you again!!

  15. Sultana Ionut May 12, 2017 at 8:30 pm - Reply

    If by any reasons the post is displaying the excerpt even if you are on that post page you need this :

    <?php

    if (is_singular()){
    the_content();
    } else {
    the_excerpt();
    }

    ?>

    This piece of code checks if you are on that post page and displays the_content instead of the_excerpt.
    Hope this helps someone.

    Edit : You don’t need the code above if you have single.php file 🙂

    I’m coming from the get_template_part tutorial.. i have problems with the output of excerpts and it seems like it’s on my IF statement. Where does the statement get the $post variable? and why is it ->post_excerpt ???? :/

    Hey, I am following this tuts from the very beginning and I didn’t understand why did we make single.php we could have done the same in page.php?

    Great job on the tutorials! Just curious, though… these lessons were made back in ’14. Given all of the wordpress releases since ’14, would your methods and simplistic approach work with newer versions?

    Did I miss how you can remove the […]? The standard get_the_excerpt function seems to generate this but I don’t like it.

  24. Your Future May 12, 2017 at 8:45 pm - Reply

    thanks but how i can the remove this […] in function
    the_excerpt();

  25. quinn d6 May 12, 2017 at 8:45 pm - Reply

    If I click on a post after using <?php the_excerpt(); ?> it doesn’t show the full text of the post, it only shows the excerpt.
    So either I’m doing it wrong or WordPress has changed.
    I don’t know how to get it to work now I’m stuck.

    Oh right not stuck anymore it was because I didn’t have single.php. That sorted it.

    You know-it occurred to me that when you use the separate excerpt field in the post form, it shouldn’t be called "excerpt". Technically it should be called "summary" or "abstract". Since it’s not technically an "excerpt".

    (But anyway, that has nothing to do with how awesome your tutorials are! Ain’t like that’s your fault.)

    Thank you of your time invested and patience in explaining. You are very good at instructing. Do any of your videos explain creating a custom category to display only blog posts from one category on one page? Do any of your videos show how to change the index.php page to a 2-column layout using Bootstrap? The videos I’ve watched show older/different code for the loop than what is being used for the Twentyfifteen, sixteen, and seventeen index.php files.

    Thank you for your awesome tutorials, they have been hands down the best WordPress theme tutorials I’ve seen! Just a quick tip for everyone watching, another way to change the get_except link text AND get rid of the three dots can be found on the WP Codex here: https://codex.wordpress.org/Customizing_the_Read_More#Modify_the_Read_More_text_when_using_the_the_excerpt.28.29

    This is great, but it doesn’t work within a blockquote. I chose blockquotes so I could get alternating colors. I’m open to other ways of doing it, but being able to just add <!–more–> would have been a lovely way to deal with it.
